A Lady Bird beetle of the family Coccinelidae. Ladybirds are totally carnivorous and the larva feed almost exclusively on aphids.

A female Stag Beetle (Odontolabis femoralis), like in all Stag beetles, lacks the prodigious development of the mandibles in the male. Both sexes are attracted to lights at Kinabalu Park.

Carnivorous in nature, a common green mantid (Parhierodula venosa) is seen here making a meal out of a cockroach. The females have been known to devour the male in the midst of copulation.

A species of Lantern Bug with its horn-like frontal extension and powder-white wings. It has mouth parts modified to be able to suck up plant saps as food. They are active during the day and are usually found perching on tree trunks in the Poring Hot Springs area in Kinabalu Park.

The stick insect genus Haaniella is easily identified by its sharp spine and a stout body. Shown here is one of the smaller species (Haaniella scabra) found in the montane forests on Sabah's Crocker Range. The insect when disturbed produces a hissing sound.

Only found in Borneo, the genus Galactea is represented by a few species with two species found on Kinabalu. The male has wings but unable to fly too well.

A flower mantid (Hymenopus coronatus) as the names implies, resembles a flower. This beautiful and superbly camouflaged insect among the flowers is a deadly surprise to unwary insects. All mantids are carnivorous.

The Dead-leaf Mantid (Deroplatys truncata) looks exactly like a dead leaf! It is active at night and is found only in lowland rain forests such as at Sepilok and Danum in eastern Sabah.

Butterflies are beautiful insects with colourful wings. Most species feed on nectar of flowers but some are attracted to ripe fruits and some, as in this Nymphalid butterfly show here, feed on animal excreta!
